A rare 3-boat heat!

On August 10, 2019, the 3rd Annual Lake Anne Cardboard Boat Regatta took place at Lake Anne Plaza in Reston, Virginia.

Almost 60 boats competed in timed heats, 2 boats a time, in various classes including one of local schools, and merchants (stores and restaurants) around Lake Anne Plaza.
Nova Labs entered a new boat this year, after having retired the boat they raced the first 2 years of the event.

Other Nova Labs family boats also entered, including one from Maker Faire NoVa, and 3 others made by Nova Labs members and at last partially constructed at Nova Labs.

The awards for first place boats in the various divisions (including “The Titanic Award” for best ‘fail’), designed and made by Nova Labs.

One benefit to sinking your boat is that you get a free ride back to the start line.

These boats are remarkably similar in design, and despite the difference in number of rowers, were evenly matched off the start line.

Fortunately this boat didn’t take on much water during its race, so it was easy to get back to the staging area (and possibly the dumpsters beyond).
Getting some encouragment from the crowd (she started with a teammate but they capsized immediately after starting – things went much better with one person in the boat).
During a quick intermission, the crowd watched a demonstration of acrobatics on a stand-up paddleboard!
