During a bitterly cold day this last weekend, a crew of 20-some hardy volunteers gathered at Nova Labs to unpack future member Karl H’s storage container. He has had his wood shop packed up in suspended animation years ago, just waiting for some place to put it. Enter the new partnership with Nova Labs!
We now have a much-upgraded wood shop using the front half of our expanded new space and Karl’s woodworking tools. It includes a massive table saw with an integrated router lift. A joiner, planer, drill press, large bandsaw, tons of wood clamps, and all sorts of other tools Karl is still rediscovering and inventorying. There will be much sorting and reorganizing for some time yet. Let us know if you want to help design the storage and layout for the future shop – it is dynamic and bound to change.
If you stop by to look at it, allocate some time. Walking around the shining expanse of the table saw will take longer than you think. Bring some water and your phone along in case you get lost. Some hackerspaces are satisfied to have a full set of screwdrivers and call this part of their tool inventory, but not us. Our new and improved wood shop represents a great capability for both people new to woodworking and hobbyists who have been doing it for years. It’s part of our ongoing effort to upgrade our capabilities and knowledge for everyone to use.
Oh, by the way – if you would like to use the equipment, just watch for our ongoing series of shop equipment orientation and safety classes.
We are open! See our COVID-19 Phase III reopening guidelines.
